The Magic of Ubud

Ubud has been fascinating people from all over the world since a while. It is here, that tourists started to travel to Bali in 20ies. Most of them fell in love with the culture and atmosphere, and some even decided to stay on and live here.
Ubud is known to be the Cultural Heart and Center of Bali. Although this statement can be a bit of a controversy, Bali has many many places where certain arts and spiritual rituals are very strong and vibrant. But it is definitely the number one place where the culture and arts are easily accessible to the common visitor.
Nowadays Ubud is getting busier and busier with many going there for day trips and plenty of Asian tourist groups arriving in buses, hopping in and out of the countless little shops that line the streets of Ubud.
Nonetheless Ubud carries the atmosphere of relaxation, where slow food, a healthy lifestyle, yoga, and spirituality reign the day attracting the digital nomads, backpackers and romantic spiritual traveler. One could say it mirrors one of the core assets of Bali: everything is available, everything can be experienced - the light and the dark.

Historical background of Ubud

The history of Ubud can be traced back to the 8th century, based on ancient literature written on lontars. A holy Hindu priest from India named Rsi Markandeya is believed to be one of the ancestors and saints who initiated civilization in Bali. He established a variety of living arrangements and rituals, for his followers at that time. Some of them are still used now, such as in the architecture of the Balinese temples.
According to Balinese beliefs, the area of Ubud caught his attention, because he felt a great vibration of energy coming from a local village during that time. When he arrived at the place he found a land that had potential to be used as a farming area, although it was a difficult process due to the hills and steep terrain.
Rsi Markandeya then introduced the locals to the terracing farming system, which is fascinating people to this day. Even before being known as a rice producing area, Campuhan Ubud was famous for producing medicinal plants (ubad) which allegedly became the origin of the name Ubud (medicine in bahasa Indonesia: obat)
