Puri Lukisan Museum

Museum Puri Lukisan is located on the main street of Ubud in the cultural heartland of Bali. The museum is on a small hill in the center of Ubud. Its gardens and rice fields to the north and west offer breezes that make it cooler than the town streets below. There are 5 groups of collections belong to this museum: Batuan Painting, Sanur Painting, Ubud painting, Young Artists Painting and wood Carving.

Puri Lukisan Museum is the oldest art museum in Bali, with diverse collections of Balinese paintings from traditional and pre-modern era. The masterpiece of paintings in this museum represent various styles of Bali Traditional painting, ranging from the Sanur painting style, Batuan painting style, Ubud painting style, and many more.

The museum was inaugurated in 1956 by the Minister of Education and Culture Mohammad Yamin. A beautiful flower garden located in front of the museum makes this museum looks more aesthetic, along with a Balinese statue wrapped in traditional cloth gives an unique ethnic touch.

The collection of paintings in the museum are displayed in three buildings called Pitamaha Gallery located on the north side of the museum, where you can see traditional Balinese modern paintings from the era before the independence of Indonesia around 1930-1945 and the collection of paintings by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862- 1978). I Gusti Nyoman Lempad is known as a "Balinese Renaissance Man", which is highly respected in Bali and also the world. He is considered a true art teacher. His artworks are not only painting but also in sculpting and architecture.

The western building is called Ida Bagus Made Gallery which showcases collection of paintings by Ida Bagus Made. While on the east side building there is a Wayang Gallery filled with many collection of wayang paintings (shadow puppetries). Other great works of Balinese artists are also kept in this museum, such as the artworks of Ida Bagus Gelgel (1900-1937), Anak Agung Gde Sobrat (1919-1992) and I Gusti Made Deblog (1910-1978 ).

Not only showcasing various types of Balinese Paintings, Puri Lukisan Ubud Museum also keeps carving artwork by the legendary artist such as, Ida Bagus Nyana (1912-1985). Ida Bagus Nyana was a very talented wood sculptor and dancer. His works called Statue of Goddess Pertiwi is one the busiest spot in this museum, since many visitors love to enjoy the beauty of this sculpture.
