Tanah Lot - Temple of the Land in The Sea

Tanah Lot is one of the most famous and visited tourism objects in Bali. Located in the southern part of Tabanan Regency, you will need about one hour drive from Denpasar City Center to reach Tanah Lot. When you arrive at the parking area of Tanah Lot you will need to walk down the street full with many stores selling souvenirs, Bintang T-shirt and a lot of Bali art products, restaurants and warung are also easy to be found in this area. After 10 minutes’ walk toward the beach, you will find a magical view of a beautiful temple sitting on a large offshore rock, and when it is a low tide hour you will see the sandy rock path as the only way to get into the temple. Visitors are not allowed to enter the area of the temple, because it is considered as one of the most sacred temples on the island.

The temple of Tanah Lot is believed as one of the work from Hindu High Priest Danghyang Niratha on 16th-century. He was originally from Blambangan, Java and fled to Bali due to the rise of Islam. On his journey to Bali, he saw a light emanating at the west coast and finally he decided to stop for a while and meditate. Many locals were starting to notice his presence and interested in learning about Hindu with him so he built the temple. Somehow it made one of the local leader feeling jealous and challenged him, but Danghyang Niratha didn’t bother then simply tossed the temple into the ocean and named it ‘Tanah Lot” which means the temple of the land in the sea. He also tossed his sashes into the wave, which believed by many people was transformed into venomous sea snakes and still dwell in caves located across the temple as the living guardian for the temple.

The best time to visit Tanah Lot is early in the morning if you want to enjoy the beautiful view by yourself and avoid the hordes of other tourists, but the sunset view on Tanah Lot is also incredible but you have to be passion to take turn taking pictures with other visitors. Along with Tanah Lot, if you crawl up north-west on the coastal line, you will find many beautiful black-sand beaches in a line. Nyanyi Beach, Soka Beach and Kelating Beach are some of the examples of the beautiful beaches on the west coast of Bali. What’s good about these beaches is the quiet and relaxing atmosphere because not so many tourists willing to go this area, some of the access/ roads need to be improved to make the visitors feel more comfortable on their trip. Some of the beaches offer an unusual view which you will see the direct view of Hindia Ocean in front of you and the green rice terrace on the back.

Tabanan The Rice Belts of Bali

Welcome to Tabanan Regency, the rice basket of Bali, southern plains with the fertile fields stretch from the foothills of Batukaru volcano to the south coast of Bali. Located at the central of Bali, the area of Tabanan regency is neighboring with Buleleng at the north side, Jembrana at the west side and Badung on the east side, while at the southern area of Tabanan is directly facing the Indian Ocean.

Tabanan once became a powerful kingdom (Mengwi Kingdom) at the 17th century which emerged around 1700 after the fall of Gelgel. At that time, Badung Regency was also part of Mengwi Kingdom until 1891 when Badung was separated from Tabanan after Mengwi was defeated on a war.

Nowadays, Tabanan is both a city and a regency, and many of the people who work in South Bali are actually from this part of the island. Tabanan itself is a typical busy Indonesian city, with some markets and warungs that may be of interest, but travelers are more likely to move on to other parts of Tabanan Regency, which is home to some peaceful black sand beaches and important, picturesque temples.
